category Shutters, posted June 7, 2011

For centuries wooden shutters have been used to protect homes from prying eyes of bypassers and thieves. At the same time wooden shutters can be made in the same style as a façade of the building and make it look really luxurious or as a traditional country house.

They protect our homes not only from prying eyes, but scalding sun, noise and wind. Wooden shutters are often used to protect outdoor gazebos and patios.

Why most people prefer wood shutters? The answer is as plain as daylight. Windows are like eyes of the house. These “eyes” can become more inviting and beautiful with help of wood shutters. The shutters can be operable and decorative.

As for the styles of wooden shutters, there are three of them: raised-panel, louvered, board and batten. In turn, louvered shutters can be made with adjustable or fixed louvers. These shutters emphasize elegant Mediterranean style of the building. Panel-raised shutters are used mainly to provide maximum privacy and protect from bad weather unlike louvered shutters used to prevent overheating of the air inside. And the last type of wooden shutters known as board and batten is usually made of strong wood such as cedar to withstand hurricanes, hailstorms and scalding sun. They remind us shutters used in Northeastern colonies and Southwestern farmhouses.

As you see wood shutters can be suited every fancy. They can be made of fine wood and varnished or made of pine and painted. They can remind us granny’s house or look contemporary and luxurious.

As for installation of the wooden shutters used outside, they are usually installed on two hinges which are screwed to the frame of the window. Shutter pintles make possible to rotate pivot points of hinges. Their standard dimensions are 2 ¼ inches (brick), 1 ⅛ inches (siding) and 4 1/16 inches (rock).
