Rocking Chairs - In Distant Days And Today

category Chairs, posted May 16, 2011

Since distant times rocking chairs have been in a great demand. Thanks to their comfort, versatility and wholesome effect, rocking chairs are still widely used. These chairs have relaxing effect and when after busy day we sit in them we feel ourselves like in paradise. Their rocking pours oil on troubled waters. Did you never dream to sit in the rocking chair, put a plaid blanket on knees and enjoy reading or watching a movie?

There are plenty of articles about origin of rocking chairs, but we would like to talk about their characteristics and materials used by their manufactures in those times and today. If the rocking chair is made in accordance with all standards it will rock in a smooth flowing manner and will not overturn when rocking. The backrest should be comfortable for the back. To make the rocking chair softer and more comfortable, sometimes people put cushions.

As for materials, in distant days they were mostly made of wicker, bamboo and some types of wood. Today there are rocking chairs of softwoods, hardwoods, bamboo, wicker, etc. As for hardwoods and softwoods, the first type of wood is more preferable because it is stronger and more durable. This is the type of wood used by our grandparents and if an old rocking chair of your granny is still used by you, it is definitely made of oak or some other type of hardwood. Among other things, old rocking chairs feature a wood flange concealing iron screws joining legs with the bottom of the seat.

You will hardly find screws made of iron in modern rocking chairs. The old rockers were upholstered with natural fabrics having a coarse weave. Today they can be upholstered both with fabric and polyester. Present day manufacturers of rocking chairs go beyond hardwoods. They use wood, steel, aluminum, chrome, plastic and even fiberglass.
