Polyurethane is combined with some chemicals increasing its density and viscosity. In such a way non-toxic foam is created. Some people call it visco-elastic memory foam. This temperature-sensitive substance is able to take the shape of the body under its weight and return to its original form in a few seconds after the person got out of the bed. It reduces pressure placed on shoulders, knees, feet and hips and at the same time provides support in waist and neck. When lying on such mattress the person seems to lie on the smooth and gentle water surface.

Though today memory foam is used in most mattresses, 50 years ago it was a real sensation. NASA developed it to improve safety of astronauts during launch. It was in 1966 and only in 1980s memory foam was made public. In 1991 the first company producing memory foam pillows and mattresses was set up. Initially, they were used in hospitals. Memory foam was too expensive to be used and only in the last few years this filler became available at the market.
